Funded by Proposition O, the Santa Monica Low Flow Diversion Project is part of the City of Los Angeles sewer improvement project along Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). The project included installation of 63” inner diameter (ID) Permalok casing and 48“ ID Hobas carrier sewer pipe inside the casing. The tunnel was constructed through very difficult tunneling conditions including sandy subsurface soils, shallow groundwater table, nearby utilities, and PCH traffic.
Despite these challenges, the project has reached completion. GMU provided instrumentation installation and monitoring during construction for subsurface movement and vibration. Using new monitoring devices equipped with Bluetooth and WiFi technology, we were able to provide near real-time monitoring data to our client via email from the project site immediately following reading of the installed devices.
